Why linux?

Why promote free software?

  • Let users choose according to their interest in evaluating new technologies (e.g. Roomba, NXP i.MX 95, Elbrus, LoongArch).
  • Establish a principle of seeking to perpetuate solutions
  • Assert and preserve the choice of depending on or doing without an IT vendor
  • Freedom from the constraints and costs imposed by restrictive software licenses
  • Use commodity hardware to reduce hardware maintenance costs
  • Acquire and strengthen expertise in open-source software to better meet the needs of faculties and users in this field
  • Across-the-board openness to anyone concerned by or interested in linux at UniGE
  • Support interested students, for example through tutorials and documentation
  • Share know-how by creating a participative UniGE community
  • Take advantage of the CERN experiment (MALT)
  • Promote interoperability by complying with standards to facilitate communication and data exchange
  • Promote exchanges of operational skills, both within and outside UNIGE
  • Promote exchanges in the use of individual personal and organizational applications
